How to Unlock Ichigo in Universal Tower Defense

To unlock Ichigo in Universal Tower Defense, you must clear Stage 7 of the Soul Reaper Raid on Nightmare difficulty, then spend 3 Hollow Masks, 15,000 Yen, and 1 Soul Reaper Badge at the Summon Altar in the lobby. The Mask is a low-drop raid reward, the Yen is standard grind currency, and the Badge only appears in the Hard or Nightmare clear chests of that same raid, so the whole unlock is a single-mode loop rather than a spread-across-the-map checklist.

The most common failure isn’t the boss. It’s arriving at the altar with three Masks and no Badge, because players farm the drop everyone talks about and ignore the one that’s guaranteed only on the hardest clear. Budget your runs accordingly.

Step 1: Reach the Soul Reaper Raid

The raid doesn’t appear at the start. It unlocks after you clear the story map through Stage 30 and finish the tutorial chain that gives you your first two units. If the raid icon is still grayed out in the mission select, you’re missing story progress, not level.

Once the raid is open, it has four difficulty tiers. Ichigo’s unlock only counts the top two:

DifficultyRecommended Team LevelClear RewardMasks per RunBadge Drop
Normal15Yen, XP0No
Hard30Yen, XP, Badge0–2~35%
Nightmare45Badge, Masks1–3~70%
Nightmare+ (weekly)55Badge, Masks, bonus2–4~90%

Notice the shape of it: Hard can technically produce everything you need, but at roughly half the drop rate and with a lower Mask ceiling. If your team can’t clear Nightmare yet, one Hard run per day is still worth it for the Badge roll, and you’ll bank Yen toward the 15,000 cost while you’re at it.

Step 2: Farm the Three Hollow Masks

The Masks are the slow part. Drop rates are not fixed — they’re weighted toward the top of each range on higher difficulties, and the weekly Nightmare+ variant is the only place where a single run can drop four.

A realistic pace: with three runs a day on Nightmare, expect the three Masks in about three to five days. On Hard, budget closer to a week and a half, because the zero-drop outcomes are common enough that you’ll notice them.

Two things speed this up considerably:

  • Clear, don’t time out. The reward chest only rolls on a full clear. A wipe on the final wave still gives partial Yen but no Mask or Badge roll, which is the single biggest time sink for players pushing above their team level.
  • Bring a stun or slow unit. The third wave spawns a pack that walks straight past your front line if you don’t have crowd control. Clearing that wave without losing your backline is what separates a clean Nightmare clear from a wipe.

If you’re short on time, the Nightmare+ weekly is the highest value per run by a wide margin. Do that first each week, then fill the rest of your attempts at whatever difficulty you clear reliably — the goal is completions, not difficulty bragging rights.

Step 3: Understand the Soul Reaper Badge

This is the gate most players hit. The Badge has no guaranteed drop on any difficulty — it’s a chest roll, and the roll only happens on a full clear.

Because Nightmare roughly doubles the Hard rate and Nightmare+ doubles it again, the practical advice is: don’t farm Hard for the Badge specifically. Farm Hard for Masks early on, and once you can clear Nightmare, farm Nightmare for the Badge. The rates line up so that you’ll usually finish the Badge around the same time you finish the Masks, rather than being stuck on either one.

If you clear your third Mask and you’re still sitting on no Badge, drop to Hard for a couple of runs — not because Hard is better, but because the volume of clears matters more than the per-run odds once you’re at the finish line. Two Hard clears have a better combined Badge chance than one Nightmare attempt you’re not confident in.

Step 4: Collect the Yen Cost

The final requirement is the least interesting and the easiest to forget. You need 15,000 Yen in hand at the altar, and Yen also funds unit upgrades, so it’s easy to spend your way back to zero while farming.

  • Daily missions alone cover roughly 2,000–3,000 Yen per day if you complete all of them.
  • Selling duplicate common units from raid chests is the fastest top-up — most players have far more of them sitting in inventory than they realize.
  • Don’t upgrade units you’re not using while saving. A single unnecessary upgrade can cost you two days of progress toward the 15,000.

Step 5: Use the Summon Altar

With all three Masks, 15,000 Yen, and the Badge in hand, walk to the Summon Altar in the lobby — it’s the glowing pedestal to the right of the mission board. Interact, select Ichigo from the locked roster, and confirm. The three materials are consumed together with the Yen, so it’s an all-or-nothing transaction; you can’t partially deposit and come back later.

One warning: the altar shows Ichigo as selectable the moment you have any single required item. Don’t press it until you have all four, or you’ll waste the prompt and have to walk back and forth. Check your inventory first.

Step 6: Upgrade Path After Unlock

Getting Ichigo is the easy half. He starts at level 1, and the early levels are cheap — it’s the higher tiers where the investment jumps. Here’s roughly what to expect in cost and what each tier buys you:

LevelYen CostMaterialsWhat It Unlocks
1–10~4,000 totalNoneBasic attack, usable but fragile
11–25~12,000 totalCommon unit dupesGetsuga ranged swing
26–40~30,000 totalHollow Masks (2–5 per tier)Bankai form, major stat jump
41–50~60,000 totalRaid Badges (1 per tier)Final passives, endgame scaling

Stop at level 25 unless you’re planning to main him. The Bankai tier at 26 is where Ichigo stops being a novelty and starts carrying stages, but it costs more than the unlock itself did — around 30,000 Yen plus a steady supply of Masks you’ll be farming anyway. Levels 41–50 re-use raid Badges, so if you’re already running the Soul Reaper Raid weekly, those aren’t a real bottleneck.

The mistake to avoid is spreading upgrades across every unlocked unit. Ichigo’s value is concentrated above level 26, so a half-upgraded Ichigo is worse than a fully upgraded common unit, and costs more.

Quick Recap

  • Unlock the Soul Reaper Raid via story to Stage 30.
  • Farm Hollow Masks ×3 and one Soul Reaper Badge from Hard or above — Nightmare roughly doubles both rates.
  • Bank 15,000 Yen without spending it on side upgrades.
  • Use the Summon Altar in the lobby with all four requirements at once.
  • Upgrade to level 25 cheaply, then commit fully to 26+ if you plan to use him.
